Ohio State, Michigan lead the way for Big Ten in preseason Coaches Poll

One can argue over the significance of preseason college football polls all they want, at least it is yet another sign that the season is indeed coming closer and closer to kicking off. As we look ahead, the Big Ten seems to figure prominently in the story of the 2016 college football season given its recent rise in the era of the College Football Playoff.

So, it should be no surprise that its two biggest brand names are the two that wave the banner for the Big Ten in the just-released preseason Amway Coaches Poll for 2016.

The Ohio State Buckeyes led all Big Ten teams in the poll, starting the season out at No. 5. Meanwhile its arch-rival up north, Michigan, was the only other Big Ten team to make the top 10 — coming in at No. 8.

Overall the top 10 looked like this:

No. 1 — Alabama
No. 2 — Clemson
No. 3 — Oklahoma
No. 4 — Florida State
No. 5 — Ohio State
No. 6 — LSU
No. 7 — Stanford
No. 8 — Michigan
No. 9 — Notre Dame
No. 10 — Tennessee

The Big Ten put just four teams in to the preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll, but all four of them were inside the top 15. Rounding out the Big Ten contingent were Michigan State at No. 11 and the Iowa Hawkeyes at No. 15.

Wisconsin, Northwestern and Nebraska all received votes, with the Badgers just two spots out of the Top 25.
